Before we get to far into pros, cons, tyre treads and traction ratings, I find that a little bit of insight into the specialist world of motorcycle tyres will help you to understand “What size tyre do I need?” but also it will probably help to understand what our tables below mean.

Trying to get your head around tyre manufacturers codes can be extremely frustrating. Deciphering the numbers on the side of the tyre is key to purchasing the right tyre.

Firstly, there are a number of different types of tyre, so you need to understand your tyres purpose and what the majority of your riding will entail; i.e. it’s not very good putting racing slicks on your tourer, if you are looking to cross the Alps.

If in doubt, can I please recommend looking up in your owners manual the essential size information and recommended tyre type. It is critical to stay within your manufacturers guidelines for type and usage to prevent fuel waste and rider safety.

To determine the ideal motorcycle tire sizing their are 5 main designations to be found on your tyres wall: Width, aspect ratio, speed rating, tyre construction and rim diameter.

  • 100 = width (millimeters)
  • 90 = aspect ratio (cross-section height is 55% of the width)
  • Z = speed rating (149mph or more)
  • R = radial construction.
  • 18 = diameter (inches)

However be sure to watch out for other critical codes such as

M/C = Motorcycle

73 = Load

Load & Speed index
